ato credit card payment changes

ATO to stop accepting credit card payments

From 1 December 2026, the ATO will no longer accept credit card payments for tax debts.

Following a review of merchant card payment costs, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is removing credit cards as a payment option from 1 December 2026.

The ATO has advised that it does not consider it appropriate for government merchant fees associated with credit card payments to be passed on to the community.

What does this mean for you?

If you currently use a credit card to pay your ATO obligations, you will need to arrange an alternative payment method before your next payment is due.

This is particularly important if you have an ATO payment plan or direct debit arrangement linked to a credit card. You will need to update your payment details to ensure your payments continue as scheduled.

The ATO has a range of alternative payment options available, including electronic funds transfer and other payment methods.
