Many businesses in Mandurah and across WA take on extra staff for the Christmas rush. Casual staff payroll needs the same care as your permanent team. In fact, setting new casuals up properly on day one saves a lot of fixing later.
Before their first shift
- Get a completed TFN declaration.
- Ask for their super fund details on a Superannuation standard choice form.
- If they don’t choose a fund, request their stapled super fund from the ATO.
- Confirm their pay rate and bank details.
Casual staff payroll each pay run
Pay casuals through your payroll software, just like your other employees. Each pay run is then reported to the ATO through Single Touch Payroll (STP). As a result, your casual staff payroll is reported as you go, with no separate report at the end of the job.
Super for casuals under Payday Super
Since 1 July 2026, you pay super every pay run. For most pays, super must reach the fund within 7 business days after payday. However, for a new employee’s first contribution you have 20 business days.
Also, before that first contribution you now need to submit a member verification request, which checks the employee’s fund details. Many payroll programs do this for you, so check how yours works. For more detail, read our Payday Super guide for WA employers or see our payroll services.
